Tan Kin Lian blames deserters, Yahoo for election defeat
28 August 2011. Xin MSN
Presidential candidate Tan Kin Lian says he is “shocked” by his loss in the 2011 Presidential Election.
He has blamed his poor showing on perceptions that he was the “weakest link” in the campaign.
In a statement issued on his Facebook page this morning, Mr Tan said he had been quite optimistic about winning the election or even coming in second.
At worst, he had expected to poll 15 per cent of the votes.
Instead, he polled less than 5 per cent and even lost his 48,000 dollar deposit.
Mr Tan said he was told that two groups of his supporters had abandoned him in favour of presidential candidates Tan Cheng Bock and Tan Jee Say.
He heard they did so because they had considered him the “weakest link”, and they had sided with the other two “stronger” candidates to prevent a win by Dr Tony Tan – who eventually won the contest.
But that was not all.
Mr Tan also blamed a Yahoo poll which showed two candidates well ahead while he came in last.
He questioned the Yahoo poll finding, saying his technical expert had told him poll outcomes could be manipulated, using an automated programme.
Citing other unnamed surveys, Mr Tan said these had instead showed all the four candidates to be quite close to each other.
Mr Tan said it was a mistake on his part not to pursue the matter with Yahoo, as it then left the impression that he was indeed the “weakest link”, leading to his supporters deserting him.

People forget about TKL, champion of the poor. At a time when no one came forward to help the buyers of the structured products, a scam of the biggest banks in USA, TKL came to the forefront to help and he succeded in getting the big local banks to pay back some of the money to the buyers, who had trickd into buying. Where were all the big guys at that time, you name them, TT, TCB and TJS. All of them too scared. No one want to be associated with the poor. You so not win votes. Singaporeans are so kiasu that everyone has to be rich. The worst thing to say is that you are poor.
I used to work as a market survey interviewer and at times I went to the one-room flats to
carry out interviews and the tenants were dead scared to open their doors and for those who did they refused to grant any interview. Is it that even the poor want to say they do not exist?
