Chiam See Tong absent at joint RP-SPP Walkabout

Mr Chiam See Tong was visibly absent at the joint RP-SPP Walkabout this morning. The walkabout took place at West Coast this morning. It appears that plans for cooperation between the 2 political parties during General Election have collapsed.

The Reform Party (RP) has been rocked by recent turmoils. Firstly, it faced resignation by key party members including the Chairman Tan Tee Seng. Secondly, there were complaints from other opposition political parties on RP’s being too aggressive in staking claims on electoral territories.

Despite the embattled situation, RP Secretary-General Kenneth Jeyaretnam persisted on in carrying out today’s walkabout. He was joined by 20 other RP members. They visited West Coast GRC, Radin Mas SMC and Pioneer SMC. Mr Jeyaretnam had revealed to the press yesterday that Mr & Mrs Chiam See Tong would join the walkabout.

Mr Chiam is the Secretary-General of the Singapore People’s Party (SPP) while Mrs Chiam (aka Madam Luo Wenli) is the 2nd Vice-Chairman of the SPP. However, both of them didn’t turn up. Mr Jeyaretnam said that Mr Chiam See Tong couldn’t make it for the walkabout at the last minute because he was busy preparing for Budget Debate in Parliament.

At the walkabout, the SPP was represented by CEC member Mohd Hamim and 5 other SPP members. Mr Hamin told the press that SPP is currently focusing its efforts on Potong Pasir SMC and Bishan-Toa-Payoh GRC. He also emphasised that there is no concrete plan of action between the RP and SPP.

According to insiders, the plan for cooperation between RP and SPP has collapsed. This is due to Mr Jeyaretnam’s insistence to target West Coast GRC while Mr Chiam is focusing efforts on Bishan-Toa-Payoh GRC.
